About Judy

Judy Davis Cheek headshot

Judy has always loved books and the stories inside. Once she could read, Judy collected words like other children collect shells or rocks and used them to create her own stories.

Although Judy has never stopped writing, as a single mother, her need to earn a living led to different kinds of writing. While working and raising her family, she completed a B.A. in Business Management and quickly progressed in a career as a Human Resources professional and leader. She wrote presentations, reports, and contracts throughout her career and took journalism and creative writing classes.

During her career, Judy traveled, developed her photography skills, and wrote journals about her travels. With retirement, Judy could focus on creative and travel writing, building her skills through additional classes and workshops. She also volunteered as a teacher’s helper for second and fourth grades, where she enjoyed helping students and saw how books could help children deal with emotions and situations.

Judy is currently working on children’s books and travel articles inspired by her experiences and travels, both near and far. She is a member of SCBWI, the 12×12 Picture Book Challenge, Inked Voices, and Children’s Book Insider

Judy and her husband live in California within driving distance of their children and grandchildren.

Fast Facts:

  • I love exploring ancient ruins and photographing waterfalls. When I travel, I insist on seeing these sights, even if it’s a long hike. My husband and children do not share this passion.

  • When I was small, I wanted a pony, but I only got to sit on one for a photo.
  • When I was 12, I wanted a horse but had only saved enough money to buy a donkey. My donkey came with a name: “Judy.” We called her “Judy Bray” to avoid confusion.

  • When I was 5, I caught my first fish; it was tiny.
  • When I was 6, I caught a bigger one.
